2023 National Contractor of the Year (CotY) Winners

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) named D. R. Domenichini (DRD) Construction in partnership with Studio 38 Designs, 2023 National Contractor of the Year (CotY) winner in the “Entire House $250,000 to $500,000” category in its annual awards competition.

For the quaint downtown Morgan Hill home, the design team at Studio 38 Designs created a whole-house design plan which included adding curb appeal to the exterior and revamping the interior layout, and modernizing every room in the cottage including the kitchen and bath designs.

Studio 38 Designs’ sister company, D. R. Domenichini Construction, was tasked with executing that design plan for their very important shared client. The homeowners, David Dindak and Kerry Wallace, are heavily involved in the local downtown Morgan Hill community and the Morgan Hill Downtown Association, where their home and the two remodeling companies are just around the corner from each other.

"Working together with the clients, Studio 38 Designs shares ideas and creates amazing designs. We always enjoy this synergy. However, this job was especially rewarding because the clients are local to our downtown location and are very involved in our wonderful community. This was a fun project, and we are honored to have been able to play a role." said Dave Domenichini, owner of D.R. Domenichini Construction.

The Homeowners' Perspective

Homeowner Kerry Wallace had this to say about their whole-home remodeling project,

“We were at a point in our lives when we wanted to downsize. We had a property in the downtown, and it was in a perfect location. The problem is that it was a fixer-upper - and it was a serious fixer-upper. We knew, right in our own backyard here in the downtown, we had an amazing company, Studio 38 Designs and DRD Construction. Not only did they have an outstanding reputation, but they were very close by here in the downtown with us.”

Homeowner Dave Dindak agreed, “It is almost seamless. (Studio 38 and DRD) were so regimented in their calendar and every week. We would meet and pick out fixtures, pick out flooring, and pick out tile, and they always had everything set up.”

Kerry added, “And the (DRD) project team was absolutely professional. They took our home to stud, and they rebuilt it, and we had a full remodel in three months, and it was within budget.”

Custom Design Solutions and Personal Touches

The full remodel included a lot of custom designs and personal touches. For example, the couple struggled with what to do with a necessary litter box in their beautiful new home when the DRD team came up with a solution to create a custom kitty “outhouse” that is accessible to the house but brilliantly discreet. The fireplace is another custom design included in the project. It’s personal and empathic design touches like these that really make this whole-home remodel a stand-out and award winner.

The NARI Contractor of the Year Awards

Each year, NARI presents CotY Awards to members who have demonstrated outstanding work through their remodeling projects. The CotY Awards are the highest form of recognition by industry leaders and peers. For the 2023 National Awards Competition, NARI received nearly 455 entries across the United States, representing over $134 million in remodeling projects.

“National CotY winners represent the pinnacle of achievement in remodeling. Their work is at the top of the industry,” said Tracy Wright, CAE, Senior Director of Membership & Chapter Services at NARI. The judging panel representing industry experts selected winners based on problem-solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, and degree of difficulty.

Consider the Usable Space in Your Laundry Room

An important consideration in designing a laundry room is having sufficient space for your needs. A minimum of 80 square feet is necessary if homeowners want a laundry space that features storage cabinets, a sink, a washer and dryer, and room to maneuver and fold clothes. Many homeowners found themselves working from home but without the dedicated home office space. We have a few clients who wehave helped carve out office space in their laundry room. Many additional in-cabinet features can be added to a laundry space to accommodate a work-from home space.

Many conveniences that make a kitchen more functional and enjoyable can be applied to laundry spaces. Much like pull-out trash cabinets in a kitchen, pull-out hampers provide a convenient and hidden space to deposit clothes that need to be washed. Pull-out cabinet shelving also provides added convenience in the laundry room as well as in the kitchen. Drying racks in the laundry space are another welcome feature. Once again we are kicking off the new year with awards! We are thrilled and humbled to have received a total of four Meta Remodeling Awards from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Silicon Valley Chapter. While we specialize in kitchen and bath design, this was an opportunity to really make an impact on the whole layout of this quaint cottage in the downtown area of Morgan Hill. The owners were looking to add a sense of spaciousness and light and this updated floorplan and design delivered.

The newly designed kitchen boosts bold patterns in blues and whites

Gold and CotY Winner: Residential Bath Remodel $75K to $100K

We work on a lot of bathroom remodeling projects, but we love this particular transitional bath design for it's seemless integration of both traditional and modern desgn elements. Notice the lighted mirrors pair beautifully with the more traditional chandelier over the tub area. Likewise the more traditional shaker-style cabinetry plays well with the modern, free-standing slipper-style bath tub.

The panoramic window really is the showstopper in this residental kitchen remodel. It's easy to overlook the creative use of color here to really bring the outside in. The blues echo the color of the sky and the natural stone reflects the natural beauty found outside.

Studio 38 Designs opened its doors on Depot Street in September 2020.

Spring is right around the corner and will be here before you know it. Now’s the time to begin putting those home remodel thoughts to paper. No better way to hit the ground running than with the help of Studio 38 Designs, a kitchen and bath design center and showroom.

Although kitchen and bath remodels are their specialty, three imaginative designers are not limited to those two spaces and will create a showcase in any room of your home. The beautiful showroom prides itself with examples of semi-custom cabinets, various countertop styles and surfaces, hardware, and flooring.

Owner Gina Varela-Domenichini is a home-grown Morgan Hillian. Her parents moved here in 1977, and Gina is a product of MHUSD. She loves Morgan Hill and its hometown feel where you can walk along downtown and always see someone you know. Husband Dave owns sister company D.R. Domenichini Construction. Both have served our community as Leadership Morgan Hill grads along with being members of (the) downtown association, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and historical society.

Gina had a career in corporate marketing. Around the time she was ready to leave, Dave was exploring possibilities of a spin-off company. This led to a business that would complement each other and Studio 38 Designs was born. Gina sees downtown as the heart of the community. She and Dave wanted to be part of it and the various options of dining, shopping and events offered. Thus, Studio 38 Designs opened its doors on Depot Street in September 2020.

Being a local, Gina understands the community and easily develops a great rapport with clientele. What she likes most is they’re always excited and eager when ready to redo their home. The designer team and support staff also enjoy working with clients. They sit down to learn your vision of transforming your home into a showcase and keep the “pain points” you have of the project in mind. Then just like family, they hold your hand along the way.

DRD Construction works very closely with Studio 38, and with both companies under the same roof, design to completion is seamless. Unique is the master calendar. Upon completion of design, an estimator creates a schedule, reaches out to the support team for buy-in, and every trade knows when they’ll be on site. Communication is also essential, and the project manager works closely with the clients and trades throughout the project.

Your humble author can attest to that. Our one-of-a-kind bungalow underwent a complete remodel that included taking it to stud and moving walls. But don’t just take my word for it. The Awards Wall is filled with successes.

Gina said if you’re thinking about remodel in 2023, you may want to schedule an appointment to meet soon. Wait time to sit with a designer in the summer can be a month out. Average timeline for design is six to eight weeks. Then figure another eight weeks for construction.

Most homeowners will tackle several renovation projects throughout their home ownership, and kitchen and bathroom remodeling always top the list.

But understanding how best to be prepared to communicate your goals, budget, and design preferences can be a challenge. Use this checklist to gather the input and inspiration to help you get started. Whether you’re working with a design professional or going it alone, taking these first steps will help you achieve the best outcome with the least amount of uncertainty.

Step 1. Establish your remodeling goals.

It doesn't matter if you plan to remodel a bath or kitchen; knowing your objectives can help determine your budget and needs. It can also help you measure your success. Do you want more storage, gathering space, lighting, or increased square footage? Make a list and add your goals in priority order.

Step 2. Gather your inspiration and curate your design preferences.

We recommend using a tool like the Houzz Ideabook, a free tool available on Houzz.com which allows users to save images from around the web. With the Houzz Ideabook, you can save photos, professionals, discussions, and stories to an Ideabook. You can also control your Ideabook’s privacy, sharing, and collaboration settings.

Step 3. Determine your remodeling budget.

This is often viewed as the most challenging step in planning a kitchen or bathroom remodel. Refer back to your list of priorities (Step 1), review your curated preferences (Step 2), and assign a dollar value for each critical project parameter. We recommend researching cost vs. value for your remodel project. This is determined by the cost of your remodel project vs. how much the investment will improve your home's resale value.

Step 4. Hire an interior designer.

Interior designers bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to a home remodel project. Their skills and expertise ensure all phases of your remodel goes smoothly --from the early stages of identifying your needs and desires to developing a budget, fleshing out a workable design, and delivery and installation. A good designer will be have a process and be able to identify the potential of a space or help you solve pain points in your space and then provide creative solutions.

Step 5. Select your contractor.

Your designer may have recommendations of who they generally work with for the “build-out.” At Studio 38 Designs, we highly recommend our sister company D. R. Domenichini Construction. But regardless of which contractor(s) you meet with to discuss your remodeling project, ensure they are licensed and bonded, and check their references and public reviews. Look for Google reviews but also reviews on Yelp and GuildQuality, a well-respected industry website.

Step 6. Build a project timeline.

Work with your designer and contractor to create a project timeline to help you meet your desired completion date for your remodel project. While some rooms can get a facelift in a few weeks, other spaces may take several months.
